Seriously the Best

Bedtime is the best!

Isaac does the funniest things every night.  Tonight he taught his "teddy" to pray.  He dragged his bear to the chair he usually kneels at and then to the bedside and had the "teddy" recite the prayer Isaac usually says when not prompted by either Jacob or I.  It's a short thanks-for-church-prayer.  And it was adorable.

Also, I'm not sure how he came to call his bear "teddy."  It was bear for a long time then one day it wasn't.  Weird.

And here's a completely random addition:  This baby growing inside me is in large part nourished by Cafe Rio.  Thank you Cafe Rio.  I am currently in a burrito induced stupor.  And I'm happy.  I think the baby might be less happy, because as Jacob put it, "how do you fit a baby and a burrito in there?"  Let's just say I'm that good.  And that ridiculously over-stuffed.

Kids Say the Best Things

I think we all know that kids are funny.  And Isaac is certainly no exception.  But it seems like he says a lot of his really funny things as he is getting ready for bed or falling asleep.

For instance:

I've been trying to work on Isaac politely asking for what he wants instead of tantrums.  It's not always successful but sometimes it is.  I generally try and figure out what the tantrum is all about and then tell him to say "Mom, may I have _____ please."  Tonight he wanted more time playing with a flashlight before bed.  I gave my usual phrase filling in the blank with "two more minutes with the flashlight."  He repeated it so we gave him a little more time.  As I was telling him his time was almost up he interrupted with a screamed "Mom" followed by "5 more minutes, flashlight, please."  This time I thanked him for asking politely but still told him no.  Jacob was laughing...a lot. Poor Isaac, obedient and still told no.

He missed a nap today so we could attend church.  Sometimes we are able to squeeze in an early one on Sundays but today it was not happening, try as Jacob and I might.  So, we put him to bed about an hour earlier than we normally do.  He was doing pretty well until we were tucking him in.  He started crying.  A lot.  After several times putting him back into bed and re-tucking he finally stopped crying.  As Jacob was shutting the bedroom door behind him he heard Isaac having this conversation:

"Make."  "Make muffins."  "Make blueberry muffins."

Random, right?  Well, to be fair he did help me make delicious blueberry muffins this morning.  But I'm still not sure why those were his final words of the day.  Maybe it was the highlight for him, I don't know.

But I do know this almost 2 year old makes us laugh every day.

And if you'd like to see him talking some Jacob took a video this morning and posted it on the family blog.  Check it out.  It's cute.  But I am totally biased.

Worth Remembering

Being a mom of an almost 2 year old makes for some pretty memorable moments.  Today I want to share two.

As Isaac has gotten to be more independent he has gotten less snugly while reading stories.  It's sad to me.  But occasionally he chooses to sit in our laps.  And I might be slightly ashamed to admit it, but I choked up a little during story time tonight.  Isaac chose to read with Dad tonight but also wanted to read to sock monkey and lion.  So he snuggled up in Jacob's lap and read to his stuffed animals, letting them "make" all the animal sounds and actions that Isaac normally does to his stories.  It was quite possibly the cutest thing I've ever witnessed.

And then he just plain makes us laugh.

We've been slowly transitioning Isaac's room to be more toddler ready and to take some of the things from his room to use in the baby's room.  So, things started by transitioning his crib to the toddle bed.  We thought it might be easier to move from the toddler bed to the twin eventually rather than right from crib to twin.  We could be wrong.  I also bought a new book shelf with some fabric baskets to store his books and toys.  He's been in the toddler bed for two or three weeks now and is doing pretty well.  He gets out a few times but usually goes to sleep pretty easily still.  The first few days were tough though, as can be expected.  however, today I assembled the shelf and put all his toys and books in the new shelf.  He thought it was the coolest thing and did not want to stop playing to go to sleep for his nap.  And then tonight I put all his stuffed animals in his room.  So, after tucking him into bed we hear him crying.  Jacob and I go to check on him to find him out of his bed saying he hurt his nose.  Jacob told him to get back in bed and Isaac just started busting up laughing as he climbed in.  I then notice ALL the stuffed animals in his bed with him.  He has way too many animals to all be in the bed at once.  I told him he could have 3 and he did not like that.  But it was really funny to see all the animals there and hear him laughing, thinking he was the funniest thing ever.  Funny kid.

I just don't know how I'm going to get all those animals into his room with out this melt down.  I'm really tired of the stuffed animals being in rooms they don't belong.  This is actually the second time we've tried putting all the stuffed animals in his room.  The first time I tried putting them in a basket hung on his wall (like I saw on Pinterest) and it looked cute.  But he was still in his crib and was crying so much because they were all out of reach and he wanted to sleep with them all then too.  Maybe I should just let him.  But it really is A LOT of stuffed animals for one little crib sized mattress.  I'm still a little paranoid about suffocating I guess.

A Big Day

I've been waiting for this day.  It's a classic toddler moment, I'm sure.  I'm just surprised it's taken so long for Isaac to get here, what with him being so curious and active and FAST!  I was cleaning up after dinner and I hear a "Sandy, we need your help up here."  So I went upstairs to our bedroom to find Isaac had gotten into my pomade and tried to do his hair.  My response was "I've been waiting for this.  Let's get the camera."  I'm pretty sure busting out the camera and handing him the pomade again was really reinforcing the lesson I'd like.  Or not.

Look how pleased he is explaining that he did his "hair, self!"

We also really made Isaac's day by taking him to the County Fair.  He got to pet a cow (he actually was really scared at first and wouldn't touch it initially until I told him it was soft), see some sheep, rabbits, pigs and horse, and hear them make their respective sounds.  Baa.  Moo.  Oink.

But best of all, he got to climb onto diggers and tractors.  This kid is obsessed with construction and farm machinery.  His favorite books are the trucks, tractor, and construction books we own.

It really did make his day to "drive" the diggers.  I'm sure we'll be hearing about it for weeks.

And how can you not be so happy just watching him when he is so clearly in heaven.
We all enjoyed the fair.

He couldn't stop staring and pointing at the next tractor.  He was running, literally, from one to the other and would barely stop long enough to take a photo.

And just for documentation sake, I'm 23 weeks pregnant in this picture.  Were I to be standing a little more to the side you would notice more my pregnant belly.
